European Parliament fails to ban destructive deep-sea fisheries and prevent overfishing - Greenpeace 10 December 2013, 13:30 CET
The European Parliament today rejected a phase-out of deep-sea bottom trawling and gill-netting, but endorsed other measures to reform some of the rules that govern deep-sea fishing. The Parliament also approved a fisheries agreement between the EU and Morocco, which will further fuel overfishing of some stocks and opens the door to fishing in the waters of the occupied territory of Western Sahara.

Negotiators from the European Parliament, the Lithuanian EU presidency and the European Commission agreed today to further dilute the EU’s carbon emission standards for cars, after Germany managed to derail a previous compromise agreement struck in June, said Greenpeace.

MEPs fall for the siren song of deep-sea fishing industry 04 November 2013, 21:11 CET
Greenpeace has criticised the outcome of today's vote in the European Parliament on deep-sea fishing as inadequate to protect fragile deep-sea ecosystems from the destructive impacts of bottom trawling and deep-sea gillnetting. The fisheries committee rejected a proposed phase-out of these destructive, subsidy-heavy fishing practices. Instead, the committee focused on weaker measures with a more uncertain impact, argued Greenpeace.

Greenpeace cautiously welcomed today's decision by the European Parliament to cap subsidies for the modernisation of the EU fishing fleet and to reject proposals to subsidise the construction of new boats. Greenpeace welcomes today’s vote in the European Parliament to support a stronger than expected fix to the EU’s ailing carbon market, but warns that the plan will have only a temporary effect.
