State of the EU auto industry - First half of 2019

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has published its Economic and Market Report covering the first half of 2019 with the latest figures on the registration, production and trade of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, both in Europe and around the world.

Passenger car registrations

  • Car registrations in Europe fell by 3.9% during the first half of 2019.
  • In the United States, sales went down by 3.3%.
  • Japanese sales remained flat during the first half of the year.
  • Car demand in China decreased by 14.4% to 9.8 million units.

Passenger car registrations by fuel type

  • Petrol represented nearly 60% of EU passenger car registrations between January and June.
  • Electrically-chargeable vehicles accounted for 2.4% of total new car sales across the EU.

Passenger car production

  • Car production on the European continent contracted by 6.2% six months into 2019.
  • North American car output decreased by 5.5% during the first half of this year.
  • Passenger car production in China fell by 12.7%, with some 10 million units built in total.

Exports and imports of passenger cars

  • Six months into 2019, EU exports of passenger cars represented a value of €62 billion.
  • In parallel, the value of EU car imports increased by 5.7% to reach €26 billion in total.

Commercial vehicle registrations

  • From January to June, EU commercial vehicle sales increased by 5.8% compared to 2018.
  • Registrations of new vans increased by 3.8% to 1.1 million units during the same period.
  • At the same time, the EU truck market expanded by 16.5% to reach 228,361 units in total.

Commercial vehicle production outlook

  • European commercial vehicle output is expected to reach 3.6 million units in 2019 (-1.4%).
  • Chinese production is set to decline this year, although less markedly than last year (-1.8%).
  • Production in Japan and South Korea is forecast to outperform 2018 results (+2.3%).
  • North America's commercial vehicle output is projected to expand by 5.1% in 2019, largely driven by high volumes of pickup trucks.

Exports and imports of commercial vehicles

  • Over the first half of the year, the total export value of commercial vehicles grew significantly (+9.8%), resulting in a trade surplus of nearly €1.6 billion for the European Union.
