Job summary

The European Stability Mechanism is seeking an experienced HR legal counsel with particular expertise and experience in employment law.

Location: Luxembourg


Reporting to the Deputy Head Legal, Institutional and HR, the primary role of the legal counsel will be to advise on employment law matters. In common with all members of the legal team at the ESM, the legal counsel may also be required to work in other practice areas.

The European Stability Mechanism ("ESM") is the crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Member States facing financing problems, and issues debt instruments to fund this financial support.

The ESM is a unique place to work with around 175 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals from every nationality from both the private and public sector.


  • Providing legal advice, where required, in relation to legal feasibility, implementation, and compliance of any HR-related matters, including advice on individual staff matters, policies, procedures, practices and HR projects, while managing legal risk
  • Drafting and reviewing HR-related documents from a legal point of view
  • Conducting research, preparing memos, developing the institutional knowledge base, and keeping abreast of legal matters and trends which have an impact on ESM HR operations
  • Assisting with potential litigation before the ESM Administrative Tribunal
  • Advising on the governance and administrative legal tasks associated with managing the European Financial Stability Facility, as well as on data protection and trademark law
  • Handling the administrative tasks related to the above responsibilities
