One currency for one Europe - The road to the euro — 20 March 2007, 18:49 CET

History was made on 1 January 1999 when 11 European Union countries created a monetary union with a single currency, the euro. Euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 January 2002. But the history of Europe's common currency has been a long time in the making and can be charted back to the origins of the European Union itself. Fifty years after the Treaty of Rome laid the foundations of today's EU, the euro is the biggest and most visible success story in the process of European integration.

This brochure provides an overview of research and development in the field of renewable energy, describing the current state of the art and the results achieved in EU-funded research projects under the Thematic Programme 'Sustainable Energy Systems' of the 6th Framework Programme 2002-2006. The projects, which have been compiled into four research areas - photovoltaics, biomass, other renewable energy sources and connection to the grid and socio-economic tools and concepts for energy strategy - are summarised giving the scientific and technical objectives and achievements of each, plus contact details for the participating organisations.

Preparing against a pandemic in the EU — 22 February 2007, 16:36 CET

A report prepared for the European Commission by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and published today, concludes that the EU and its Member States have made major progress in preparing against an influenza pandemic - but they still have at least two more years of work to do. Additional efforts need to be made in areas such as: consistency of planning across all government departments; implementation at local level; co-ordination at European level; research on influenza; and response to seasonal influenza. The report has been prepared with information and input from 25 EU Member States plus Iceland and Norway. A further progress report is planned for late 2007.

Fourth European Working Conditions Survey — 22 February 2007, 01:40 CET

EU policymakers recognise that improving working conditions is crucial to achieving a better quality of work, greater productivity and increased employment – the Lisbon objectives. In this context, the Foundation’s European Working Conditions Surveys, conducted every five years, have been providing a valuable insight into key aspects of work since 1990. This report analyses the findings of the fourth European Working Conditions Survey, carried out in autumn 2005 across 31 countries, including the 27 EU Member States. Based on workers’ responses, it paints a broad and varied picture of the physical, intellectual and psychological dimensions of work and its impact on personal fulfilment and work-life balance.
