The publication presents the different stages in venture capital investments - early stage and expansion and replacement stage- and their situation in different parts of the world. After a boom in 2000, venture capital investments collapsed both in the United States and in Europe, waiting 2005 to live some kind of revival. UK is the absolute leader in using those investments as source of financing in Europe where entrepreneurs still prefer more traditional forms of financing. Some significant examples of national venture capital associations from different parts of the world are also presented.

Competitiveness here is understood to mean a sustained rise in the standards of living of a nation or region and a level of involuntary unemployment as low as possible. At the level of an industrial sector, competitiveness is understood as maintaining and improving its position in the global market.

Preparing against a pandemic in the EU 22 February 2007, 16:36 CET
A report prepared for the European Commission by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and published today, concludes that the EU and its Member States have made major progress in preparing against an influenza pandemic - but they still have at least two more years of work to do. Additional efforts need to be made in areas such as: consistency of planning across all government departments; implementation at local level; co-ordination at European level; research on influenza; and response to seasonal influenza. The report has been prepared with information and input from 25 EU Member States plus Iceland and Norway. A further progress report is planned for late 2007.

In this context, the Foundation’s European Working Conditions Surveys, conducted every five years, have been providing a valuable insight into key aspects of work since 1990.
