EU Regulation of Chemicals: REACH (Rapra Review Reports) (Paperback) 13 September 2007, 18:15 CET
Chemical control measures in the EU are soon to be dramatically revised, and this "Rapra Review Report" sets the scene by describing the key facts of the existing measures and the objectives of the future chemicals policy: REACH. REACH - Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals - will place a duty on companies that manufacture, import and use chemicals in the EU to assess the risks arising from their use and manage any risks identified. With industry concerns about the cost of compliance in terms of testing, in-house management, and scientific and regulatory advice and consultancy, this "Rapra Review Report" presents the essential details of the objectives and timescales involved with the legislation. The objective of the new legislation is to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment whilst maintaining an efficient internal market and innovation and competitiveness in the chemical industry. The author covers the main points, with abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library identifying the sources for further reading on this subject. This "Rapra Review Report" is essential reading for chemical and material manufacturers and suppliers. It describes clearly the forthcoming fundamental changes to chemical control in the EU.

Aspects of European Cultural Diversity (What Is Europe?) 11 September 2007, 18:32 CET
The word 'Europe' is seen and heard constantly, in newspapers, on television and children are taught about it in school. But what does it really mean to us? Does it have the same meaning for everyone? How does it affect our everyday lives? Do we consider ourselves to be Europeans and what does that mean in practice? This book concentrates on aspects of European cultural diversity. The four essays included deal with language, education, the mass media and everyday culture. The issues under discussion are those that strongly influence the way in which we define our common, everyday identity. They are also issues which determine our access to opportunities of different kinds. The book is designed to enable readers to identify those factors which make them and their own environment unique and to place themselves within the context of everyday Europe.

EU Food Law: Protecting Consumers and Health in a Common Market (Modern Studies in European Law) (Hardcover) 11 September 2007, 18:15 CET
This is the first comprehensive analysis of the European Union law of food regulation. It details the way in which EU law impacts upon the production and sale of food throughout the Union. It examines the legal protection accorded to the free movement of food within the EU, discussing those circumstances in which Member States may derogate from this principle, in particular where this is done to protect human health or safeguard consumer interests. Chapter four discusses and places in context the international trade law influences on EU food law. Chapter five describes EU responses to recent food safety crises - avian influenza and BSE. The book also deals with issues such as nutrition law and policy, obesity, GMOs, organic food, animal welfare and food naming and labelling. This book offers an account of the historical, political, sociological and jurisprudential context of European Union food law. The author, who is an academic and consultant in this area, translates the legal and scientific complexities of food law into a lucid and compelling narrative. The resulting work will also prove an indispensable guide to the practitioner.

The REACH Directive - Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals 16 July 2007, 23:36 CET
Full text of REACH Directive - from the Official Journal of the European Union L 136, 29.05.2007. In order to introduce a chemical substance on the European Union market, a manufacturer or importer must demonstrate its safe use. It has to submit comprehensive information on properties of the substance to the new European Chemicals Agency, which will evaluate the chemical before authorising it in the EU. The agency is established by REACH, which stands for 'Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals' — an EU regulation creating a single system for all chemical substances. The regulation also implies that EU member states will examine substances of concern, as well as deal with proposals for animal testing, trying to limit this practise as much as possible. Chemicals that can cause cancer, mutations or reproduction problems, or that accumulate in our bodies and in the environment, will need use-specific authorisations. In an attempt to encourage chemical companies to replace unsafe substances by safer ones, the companies must prove that the risks are adequately controlled, or that social and economic benefits outweigh the risks, and suitable alternative substances do not exist.

A CD is included which, apart from a substantial amount of documentary information, invites the reader to review statistical data by means of an easy-to-use numerical presentation tool.

Electricity Consumption and Efficiency Trends in the Enlarged European Union: Status Report 2006 16 July 2007, 23:33 CET
Electricity consumption in the EU-27 Member States and Candidate Countries has continued to grow in the last years despite numerous energy efficiency polices and programmes at EU and national level. In the period 1999-2004, in the EU-25, total electricity consumption has grown by 10.8% in the residential sector, by 15.6% in the tertiary sector and by 9.5% in the industrial sector. Despite this increase and the consequent impact on CO2 emissions, there is little knowledge at European level, where the electricity is used, what is the status of efficiency of the installed and sold equipment and what is the likely impact of the past, present and planned policies. This report summarises the result of a 2006 in-depth survey on the electricity consumption in buildings in the enlarged EU and Candidate Countries, together with the present market share of efficient appliances and equipment. One of the aims of this report is to show the present status of electricity consumption for the main appliances and equipments, and on the base of the best available data estimate the saving potential for electricity in buildings in EU Member States and Candidate Countries. It also describes the policy actions introduced at EU level and some of the national policies. The report focuses also on motor driven systems, a horizontal technology present in all types of industry. In particular electric motors are responsible for 10 to 20% losses of the above indicated electricity consumption in the process of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy.
