Members of the Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee will consider and vote on the amendments tabled to the draft report of Toine Manders (ALDE, NL) on Textile names and related labelling. The proposed revision simplifies the existing regulatory framework for the development and uptake of novel fibres by reducing the time required for placing a new fibre on the market.

Toine Manders submitted his Draft Report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on textile names and related labelling of textile products on 23 February 2010. Among other amendments, Manders proposes that the label of the product should indicate the source of any animal-derived materials in the product so that consumers are able to make informed choices.

"The Commission should submit a report to the European Parliament and the Council regarding possible new labelling requirements to be introduced at Union level in order to harmonise, standardise and simplify the labelling of textiles products, with the view to providing consumers with accurate information on the composition, properties, care, origin and size of textile products," says the report.

"The labelling shall be easily accessible, visible and securely affixed to the textile product. It shall remain legible throughout the normal lifetime of the textile product. The labelling and the way in which it is affixed shall not cause the consumer any discomfort when wearing a textile product." Moreover, this information should be clearly visible to the consumer in any official language of the EU which is easily understood by the end consumer in the Member State in which the textile products are made available.

The Internal Market Committee published Amendments 56-100 on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on textile names and related labelling of textile products on 22 March 2010.

MEPs from the Internal Market Committe will vote on the amendments tabled to the draft report of Toine Manders on Thursday, 8 April.
