Just a few hours after the glitter has settled on the official Oscars ceremony, Plan EU Liaison office is delighted to bear witness to the success of Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire", which stars Anil Kapoor in a leading role. Kapoor, who has actively supported Plan's work for a number of years, recently donated his entire fee for "Slumdog Millionaire" to Plan's Universal Birth Registration campaign.

Universal Birth Registration: A Plan Priority

An estimated 36% of births in India go unregistered. Birth certificates give children an official identity, allowing them easier access to services such as education and health care, as well as protection from early marriage, child trafficking and child labour. In the last year, Plan's projects in India have resulted in the registration of 111,279 children.

Film funded by the European Commission MEDIA programme

"Slumdog Millionaire" received EUR 200,000 in EU-funding from the European Commission's MEDIA 2007 programme, mainly for distribution.

Indian-born Plan EU Head of Office, Deepali Sood, was pleased that the EU contributed to the making of this film: ". We are delighted with the film's Oscar success and would like to take this opportunity to thank Anil Kapoor once again for his generosity and commitment to Plan's work".

Plan works to achieve lasting improvements for children living in poverty in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives.
