The conference will have four main themes: climate change,
seabird-fishery interactions, protection of marine habitats, and seabird
restoration.
- 'Climate change comparative ecosystem dynamics of the world's
oceans' will look at the global seabird community, climate change and
the marine environment.
- 'Interactions between seabirds and fisheries: a global
perspective' will cover the rapid increase in industrial fisheries
around the globe during the 20th century and the levels of interactions
between seabirds and commercial fisheries in nearshore, coastal and
pelagic systems. These interactions include mortality of seabirds as
bycatch, competition between fisheries and seabirds for prey, and the
use of discarded bycatch as food by scavenging seabirds.
- 'Spatial ecology at sea: opportunities and challenges for seabird
marine protected areas' will examine some of the most challenging
aspects of seabird conservation, including the identification of
critical habitats and the development of strategies to protect these
habitats.
- 'Seabird island ecology and restoration: a global synthesis' will
highlight the effects of seabirds and seabird predators on islands
worldwide, and look at recommendations for the effective restoration of
seabird populations and nesting habitats.
