Solana will probably miss EU-Russia summit

16 May 2007, 12:00 CET

(BRUSSELS) - European Union foreign affairs chief Javier Solana will probably miss this week's EU-Russia summit for "purely logistic reasons," his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Solana is due to receive the Charlemagne award in Aachen, Germany, on Thursday, the day the summit starts in Samara, on the banks of the Volga in Russia.

In his official itinerary, Solana is still due to attend the second day of the EU-Russia summit on Friday.

"If he is absent it will be purely logistic," spokeswoman Cristina Gallach said, adding that the German trip had been organised months ago.

On Thursday in Samara Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to host a dinner for the EU delegation.

The formal summit will last just a few hours on Friday followed by lunch.

The Charlemagne prize, first awarded in 1950, is given for "most valuable contribution in the services of Western European understanding and work for the community".

Last year it was awarded to Luxemburg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.
