Tragic US military base shooting hard to bear: security chief

(BRUSSELS) - US homeland security chief Janet Napolitano on Friday decried the "tragic shooting" at a military base in Texas that left 13 dead.

"This was a horrific act of violence even harder to bear because it happened to soldiers on our own soil," Napolitano told reporters in Brussels after discussions with European Union parliamentarians.

"This is indeed a great tragedy in our country and for our country," she said, offering sympathies to the families of the victims at the military base where US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan went on a shooting spree on Thursday.

Napolitano, who had been discussing visa regimes and security measures and the Guantanamo camp with the EU parliament's civil liberties committee, refused to speculate on whether there was any terrorist link.

"The investigation into the shooting has began and it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause for such a terrible crime," she said.

The Fort Hood base where the attack occurred houses tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians.
