EU says deadly Kiev clashes 'very worrying'

Federica Mogherini

(BRUSSELS) - EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini expressed concern over "very worrying" deadly clashes in Kiev as Ukrainian lawmakers backed an autonomy plan for rebel regions on Monday.

"This process shouldn't be jeopardised by violence; today's events are very worrying," Mogherini said in a statement.

"We offer our condolences to the family of the deceased law enforcement officer and our deepest sympathy to those injured in the explosion during the demonstration."

A policeman was killed and dozens injured in street battles with protesters in Kiev as Ukrainian lawmakers gave their initial backing to controversial legislation granting more autonomy to pro-Kremlin rebels.

Mogherini said the vote, a key part of the Minsk peace agreement signed in February, was an "an important step" towards devolving power to Ukraine's regions.

"The amendments will also facilitate the implementation of the Minsk agreements," she said.
