Poland wants job interviews for new key EU posts

(WARSAW) - Poland wants candidates for the European Union's new key posts of European Council president and representative for foreign and security policy to undergo job interviews before final approval.

A foreign ministry document, obtained by AFP on Tuesday, suggested candidates should be invited to present their vision of the new posts at a meeting with heads of state or government.

Warsaw insists the selection procedure for the new key posts created under the European Union's Lisbon Treaty "should be as transparent and democratic as possible."

"This will enhance the consensus surrounding those candidates who are eventually chosen," it said.

"The posts (of president and diplomatic chief) are new and can be exercised in different ways depending on the person chosen. It would be good to be able to choose between different approaches," Polish foreign ministry spokesman Piotr Paszkowski told AFP.

The 27 European Union member states are engaged in intense negotiations on who will fill the new posts.
