Bulgaria asks for EU help with Syrian refugees

(SOFIA) - The European Union's poorest country Bulgaria launched an appeal on Tuesday for financial support from the bloc to help it cope with an influx of people fleeing Syria's civil war.

"Bulgaria has proven itself as a reliable partner within the European Union. We have shown that we can protect the EU's outer border, while undertaking a serious burden ourselves," Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev said in the town of Elhovo, on the southeastern border with Turkey.

Bulgaria has already filled in an application for financial aid from the European Commission to help process and accommodate the ever-growing numbers of refugees, mostly Syrian, illegally crossing over the border from neighbouring Turkey and Greece, he added.

To date, 4,010 people, including 1,465 Syrians, are currently seeking refugee status in Bulgaria. Another 1,000 people were also being held at the borders but were yet to decide whether to apply for protection, ministry data showed.

The country's three refugee centres -- with space for only 1,100 people -- have long been overflowing with migrants, prompting the government to put people in detention centres and start an urgent search for buildings that can be turned into shelters.

Yovchev said the government would also study the possibilities of transferring some of the migrants to other EU member states.

Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov meanwhile urged prosecutors in the border regions to be more lenient, saying that it was "justified" not to fine people crossing the border with their children, even if strictly speaking it was illegal.

More than two million people have fled Syria since the war broke out there in 2011, mostly to neighbouring Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.

bulgaria asks for EU help

Poor bulgarian bastards I suppose they can not milk the refugees for "soup" money as they do with the travellers to and from Turkey.

Serves the bastards right.

I am tired of their corrupt police jumping in front of my car from behind a bush and claiming that I was speeding when in rality I was doing 25 KPH and no more. Then they proceed to demand a what they call "soup" money. They did that twice this summer going and coming back.

EU should monitor and fire these corrupt bastards.

And then they have the midnight mafia cruising the roads and trying to cut you off and grab whatever is in your car.
Driving in EU is not safe or enjoyable any longer.
So much for the united countries of Europe!!!!!!!!

actually refugees come to bulgaria from turkey - and why thousands of them leave this "country"? by itself turkey receives many millions to support refugees, turkish police were vodeo-recorded as they checked refugees very close to boundary with bulgaria-however turkish cops did not stop them to illigally cross the border. also just recently mass protests started in turkey and local police and jandarms beat and even killed civilians who protest muslim government, and kurds solders fighting for liberations are returning; interestingly istambul protesters claim turkish state debt is already about 400 bln usd, and keep growing, and when turkish secret police lets refugees from somalia cross borders with bulgaria and greece turkish cops thus sponsor the entry of muslim extremist in Europe - the turkish policy is obvious - to weaken its neighbours, to expose us to potential terror attacks, so bulgarians are very soft we have not yet closed the boundary with turkey, and we pay about 600 euros per month for every refugee.
