(STOCKHOLM) - The Swedish government announced Tuesday the nomination of Birgitta Ohlsson to the post of EU minister, left vacant by Sweden's new EU commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem.

"Brigitta Ohlsson, a member of parliament from the Liberal party, is appointed today as EU minister," the statement said.

Ohlsson, born in 1975, has been a liberal party member of the Swedish parliament since 2002. She is a member of the standing committee on foreign affairs and has a background in political science.

Sweden's previous EU Minister, Cecilia Malmstroem, officially stepped down on January 22 after being named EU commissioner for home affairs.
