EU court orders Telefonica to pay antitrust fine

(LUXEMBOURG) - The European Court of Justice upheld an antitrust fine of 152 million euros ($202 million) on Thursday against Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica for abuse of a dominant market position.
The fine had been imposed in 2007 after the European Commision found that Telefonica had abused its dominant position in the wholesale high-speed Internet market between 2001 and 2006.
The court rejected an appeal by Telefonica, which held a monopoly in Spain until the telecom market was opened up to competition in 1998.
