Slovenia extends labour restrictions for Croatian workers

(LJUBLJANA) - Slovenia's parliament on Thursday extended until 2018 the labour market restrictions for Croatian workers introduced before neighbouring Croatia joined the European Union in 2013.

"Slovenia is still facing problems with its labour market, as is Croatia. Therefore lifting the restrictions would cause disturbances in our market," the eurozone country's labour ministry said as it proposed the bill.

Under the bill, passed with 69 votes against eight in the 90-seat parliament, Croatian citizens will continue to work in Slovenia under the same conditions now in force for non-EU citizens.

Slovenia, the first former Yugoslav state to join the European Union in 2004, was severely hit by recession but started recovering in 2014 when its economy expanded by 2.6 percent.
