EU calls for more progress in Serbia-Kosovo talks

(BRUSSELS) - The European Union called Thursday for further progress in talks between Serbia and Kosovo to normalise ties, warning Belgrade that it was an "essential" step in its bid to join the EU.

EU enlargement commissioner Stefan Fuele met in Brussels with Serbia's deputy premier and interior minister, Ivica Dacic, two weeks before an EU summit during which leaders will decide whether to give Belgrade candidate status.

"I emphasised the continuing expectation of the European Union that the dialogue is now actively pursued, that it leads to tangible results by identifying practical solutions for the benefit of the people," Fuele said.

Serbia and Kosovo made limited progress Tuesday when they resumed an EU-brokered dialogue aimed at easing day-to-day problems caused by Belgrade's three-year-long refusal to recognise Pristina's declaration of independence.

The negotiations had broken off in September when a border dispute in northern Kosovo turned violent.

Fuele "took note" of recent steps taken to implement agreements that have been reached so far.

But he also "expressed expectation that other steps will follow swiftly and allow as soon as possible for effective implementation of all agreements."

"These steps are essential in order for the Commission's recommendation to be positively received by member states in view of their decisions in December," he added.

The two sides are expected to meet again next week.
