European Parliament demands sanctions over Magnitsky case

(BRUSSELS) - The European Parliament voted Wednesday to demand EU sanctions on 32 Russian officials implicated in the 2009 death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and later attempts to suppress the case and harass his family.

The resolution -- which is not legally binding and is seen mainly as a political statement -- calls on the European Council to impose a visa ban and asset freeze on the 32 officials.

An icon of the anti-corruption movement in Russia, Magnitsky died in prison after revealing embezzlement worth 5.4 billion rubles (130 million euros, $180 million) by Russian police and tax officials.

In July, nearly four years after his death, he was found guilty of tax evasion by a Moscow tribunal.

The Magnitsky case has been a particular source of tension with the United States, which passed a "Magnitsky Act" in 2012 banning nearly 20 Russians from entering the country.
