(BRUSSELS) - EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini voiced "indignation" Saturday over the assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, calling for a "full, rapid and transparent" probe.

"It is with indignation and deep sadness that I have learnt the news about the brutal murder," Mogherini said in a statement. "The EU expects the Russian authorities to conduct a full, rapid and transparent investigation into this assassination, bringing the culprits swiftly to justice."

Nemtsov "was a strong advocate for a modern, prosperous and democratic Russian Federation, open to the world," she said.

The former deputy prime minister "was killed just before a demonstration against the effects of the economic crisis and the conflict in Ukraine" that was planned for Sunday, she noted.
