(BUCHAREST) - Romanian prime minister-designate Victor Ponta said Monday he would respect the outgoing cabinet's commitments to the International Monetary Fund and European Union, for this year at least.

"Our intertion is to respect pledges made by the government to international lenders within the limits of the 2012 budget," Ponta told media after he met with a joint EU-IMF delegation.

"We hope the new government will earn parliament's confidence on May 7 and will approve a letter of intent with the IMF the next day," the new left-of-centre leader added.

Romanian President Traian Basescu named Ponta to take over from Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, whose centre-right government collapsed Friday owing to a no-confidence vote sponsored by the opposition against privatisation plans.

Ungureanu's government fell as experts from the IMF and EU were conducting a review of Romanian economic reforms in the country's capital.

Under an agreement concluded in March 2011, Bucharest had agreed to curb public spending and to privatise several state energy companies.

Ponta, the head of the Social-Liberal Union, said his new government's economic proposals would be included in a 2013 draft budget to be submitted to parliament in September.
