Romania emerges from recession in Q2
(BUCHAREST) - Romania's economy emerged from recession in the second quarter of 2012, booking 0.5 percent growth compared to the first three months of the year, official estimates showed on Tuesday.
The return to growth comes as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) end an evaluation mission in Bucharest to review the progress of the Romanian economy.
Romania, which joined the EU in 2007 but has not yet adopted the euro, suffered two years of severe recession in 2009 and 2010.
It booked modest growth in 2011 before seeing its economy shrink again in the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of this year.
The national statistics office is due to publish detailed second-quarter figures on September 6.
