(BUCHAREST) - Romania and Bulgaria want to build two new hydroelectric power plants together, Romanian deputy economy minister Tudor Serban told the Romanian news agency Newsin on Sunday.

A cooperation memorandum for the project will be signed "within a month", he added.

The Bulgarians "want to build two hydroelectric power plants with us, using European funds. Experts from both our countries will meet to work on a memorandum, which will then be presented to the European Union", Serban told Newsin.

He did not exclude that the two hydroelectric plants could be located on the Danube river but declined to comment further.

Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Traitcho Traikov had hinted during an economic forum in Bucharest at the beginning of the month that the two countries could work together to develop hydroelectric power plants.

Most of Bulgaria's energy currently comes from coal and nuclear power plants.
