Germany wants 'new chapter' in ties with Poland

(WARSAW) - Germany and Poland want to begin a "new chapter" in their relations, a junior minister in the German foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Cornelia Pieper said the new coalition government in Berlin wanted as close relations with Poland as it did with France.

"We are opening, I believe, a new chapter in bilateral relations, because ... Poland and Germany are partners in Europe," Pieper said.

"Poland is our neighbour to the east and we want to treat Poland on the same footing as our European partners. This is not a challenge but a heartfelt need," she said.

Next year the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of their good neighbour treaty. Poland had been carved up between Germany and the former Soviet Union just days before World War II.
