EU alarmed by attack on UN agency in Pakistan

(BRUSSELS) - The European Union expressed alarm over an attack on the UN World Food Programme's office in Islamabad on Monday and urged Pakistan to quickly catch the perpetrators.

The EU's Swedish presidency said in a statement that it "finds it utterly unacceptable that a UN agency, whose humanitarian and development work benefits all Pakistanis, is made a target in this way".

A suicide bomber dressed in military uniform struck inside the heavily fortified WFP in the Pakistani capital on Monday, killing four Pakistanis and an Iraqi working for the food agency.

"The Presidency is alarmed that the UN, for the first time ever, has become the target of a suicide attack in Islamabad," the statement said.

"The Presidency takes it that the Government of Pakistan will take all necessary steps to swiftly apprehend the culprits behind this heinous crime and bring them to justice."
