(THE HAGUE) - Strict budgetary discipline will only let the European Union emerge from financial crisis if it is accompanied by job-creation measures, Belgian and Dutch leaders said Wednesday.

"It's not enough to just talk about budgetary discipline," said Mark Rutte, the Netherlands' prime minister. "We ask that European summits are also devoted to economic growth and job creation."

Rutte was speaking at a press conference in The Hague to mark a visit from Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo.

An informal European summit set for January 30 in Brussels is expected to tackle various themes including employment and economic growth, areas often overlooked as nations struggle to contain the debt crisis.
