Montenegro appoints new foreign minister

(PODGORICA) - Montenegro on Wednesday appointed Nebojsa Kaludjerovic as its new minister for foreign affairs and European integration, following last month's start of EU accession talks.

Kaludjerovic -- a career diplomat and Montenegro's first ambassador to the United Nations after it proclaimed independence in 2006 -- was voted in by 43 out of 58 deputies in the parliament.

He takes over from Milan Rocen, Montenegro's first foreign policy chief since it gained independence, who resigned after the tiny Adriatic republic on June 29 received the green light to start talks on EU accession.

Rocen said he wanted to pave the way for a new chief diplomat as the country seeks to join the European bloc.

Montenegro -- once one of six republics of the communist Yugoslav federation that fell apart in the early 1990s -- was allied with Serbia until 2006 when it proclaimed independence following a historic referendum.
