(BRUSSELS) - European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton on Wednesday condemned a decision by the Israeli authorities to allow construction around a hotel in East Jerusalem.

"The European Union condemns the recent decision of the Israeli authorities to authorise construction around the Shepherd Hotel in East Jerusalem," she said.

"The international community is making every effort to facilitate the resumption of peace talks. Settlement construction in East Jerusalem is illegal and undermines these efforts. The EU calls on Israel to reverse this decision," she said.

US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at the White House on Tuesday.

Ties between the two allies have been severely rattled by an Israeli decision to construct 1,600 more Jewish settlements in another area of East Jerusalem, which Palestinians see as their future capital.
