Ashton to join Euro-MPs in urgent Mali debate
(BRUSSELS) - EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will Tuesday join an urgent debate on the situation in Mali with European lawmakers meeting in plenary session in Strasbourg.
The debate on Mali beginning at 1530 GMT was requested by lawmakers and was originally planned along with other foreign policy questions Wednesday.
Ashton however said she was not available Wednesday, irritating European Parliament president Martin Schulz and causing a change of schedule.
"In no national parliament would it be acceptable for a minister to refuse to respond to a request from parliament," he fumed.
The debate takes place after Monday's UN Security Council meeting on Mali and before an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council on Thursday, the parliament said.
