(BEIRUT) - Lebanon and the European Union on Friday signed two finance agreements worth 22 million euros (29 million dollars) aimed at promoting reform, the premier's office said.

"The head of the EU delegation, Patrick Laurent, and the (Lebanese) cabinet secretary general, Suhayl Buji, signed two finance accords between Lebanon and the EU," Prime Minister Saad Hariri's office said in a statement.

The agreements, of eight million and 14 million euros, "are aimed at supporting the Lebanese government in carrying out priority reforms," it said.

These aim to consolidate economic development and reform public finances and the education sector.

Lebanon, with a public debt of nearly 51 billion dollars -- 156 percent of GDP in 2009 -- has had an association agreement with the European Union since 2006.
