EU Parliament improves cross-border pension rights
(STRASBOURG) - The European Parliament adopted new rules Tuesday that make it easier for European Union citizens who have worked in another member state to maintain their pension rights across borders.
The rules will help to remove current obstacles, such as a requirement for very long periods of employment to acquire rights, or the risk of losing rights when transferring from one pension scheme to another.
"Workers need to rely more and more on supplementary pensions across Europe," said the EU's Employment Commissioner Laszlo Andor.
"It is vital to ensure that those who move across borders are not penalised."
Workers will be entitled to a pension after three years of work under the rules, instead of five or even 10 years as is currently the case.
EU nations have four years to transpose the rules on pension rights into national law.
