(BRUSSELS) - The European Union called on Tuesday for the removal of barricades erected by Serbs in northern Kosovo after a new bout of violence erupted at the tense border with Serbia.

"We strongly condemn the violence that has taken place in northern Kosovo against the international community and we call on everybody to show restraint and act responsibly," said Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

As Serb and Kosovar officials prepared to resume EU-brokered talks in Brussels, four NATO soldiers and six Serb protesters were wounded when clashes erupted after the troops moved in to take down roadblocks.

"The EU equally supports the removal of the barricades. These barricades restrict freedom of movement and should be removed," Kocijancic said.
