Kosovo urged to step up graft fight: EU

(PRISTINA) - Kosovo must make real progress in fighting corruption and organised crime if Pristina is to achieve its goal of EU membership, a European Union official said Friday.

"I made a point that this year is very important not only to hear the words but also to have some deeds in this regard," enlargement commissioner Stefan Fuele told reporters after meeting Kosovo's top officials.

Kosovo's president Fatmir Sejdiu told journalists it was Kosovo's vision to one day achieve EU membership. Pristina declared independence from Serbia in February 2008 and it has been recognised by 65 countries, including the US and all but five EU members.

Serbia opposes the move and still considers the territory as its southern province.

"Kosovo has a vision to be a member of the EU and NATO in the future. This time will come," Sejdiu said.
