Italian MEP thrown out by eurosceptics after racist remarks

(BRUSSELS) - Italian rightwinger MEP Mario Borghezio was thrown out of the European Parliament's eurosceptic group Monday for "repugnant" racist comments against Italy's first black government minister.

"Borghezio has been expelled from the Europe of Freedom and Democracy group (EFD) in the European Parliament today," said Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's UKIP party and co-president of the EFD.

"The vast majority of MEPs in the group moved for his expulsion," he added in a statement.

The Northern League member had issued a string of insulting remarks against Congolese-born Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, the least insulting of which was that "she looks like a housewife".

A petition in the European parliament calling for his resignation gathered 130,000 signatures.

Farage said that "I made it clear at the last Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group meeting that unless Mr Borghezio was expelled that UKIP would leave the Group.

"Mr Borghezio has now been expelled for his repugnant comments," he added.

Thank goodness for Mr Farage, staunch defender of human rights in the EU. And there we were thinking he was a small-minded individual who disliked foreigners and saw the economic crisis as an opportunity to prey on ordinary people's fears and prejudices
