(BRUSSELS) - The European Union said Thursday it had authorised the signing of a first-ever contractual relation between the bloc and Iraq.

A partnership and cooperation agreement puts in legal form arrangements covering "regular political dialogue to trade relations and regulatory cooperation, and development assistance."

The EU said it will treat the mini-treaty as active pending its legal entry into force.
