(BRUSSELS) - The European Union imposed new sanctions on Ivory Coast's outcast leader Laurent Gbagbo on Wednesday, banning the purchase of bonds from his "illegitimate government."

The 27 EU states "adopted new legislation today to impose additional restrictive measures against Cote d'Ivoire, in view of the gravity of the situation there," the EU said in a statement.

"Under this legislation the EU has banned the purchase of bonds and securities from and the provision of loans to the illegitimate government of Laurent Gbagbo," it said.

"It has also provided for exemptions to ensure that funds needed for humanitarian purposes are available."

The EU also added an individual to its list of people subjected to a visa ban and an assets freeze.

This brings to 92 the number of people facing such sanctions for obstructing peace and reconciliation, blocking the work of UN operations and committing serious human rights violations.

The EU has slapped a raft of sanctions against Gbagbo and his associates over his refusal to step down after he lost November elections to Alassane Ouattara, whose victory has been recognised by the international community.

Pro-Ouattara forces launched an assault on Gbagbo's residence in Abidjan's northern suburb Cocody on Wednesday in a fresh effort to end his hold on power.
