Hungary vote on media law changes maybe Monday

(BUDAPEST) - Hungary's parliament could vote as early as Monday on amendments to its controversial media law that were drawn up last week in response to EU criticism.

Justice Minister Tibor Navrasics, who signed the amendments, has requested an accelerated procedure, which could allow a debate and vote on the media amendments on Monday, if approved by 80 percent of MPs, the government said.

The changes, drawn up last week after Hungary came under heavy fire from many of its European Union partners, were put to parliament on Wednesday with a vote initially expected by mid-March at the latest.

The amendments cover areas such as balanced reporting, fines, media registration rules and freedom of speech issues.

The row over the media law poisoned Hungary's rotating six-month EU presidency just as it kicked off on January 1, the same day the law came into force.
