Hungary picks candidate for EU Commission
(BUDAPEST) - Hungarian Premier Gordon Bajnai on Thursday named Laszlo Andor, a top official at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Developent (EBRD), as Budapest's choice for the European Commission.
Bajnai told the Hungarian parliament that he had informed Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso of his choice.
Andor, 43, is an economist by training. Prior to his position on the board of directors of the London-based EBRD, he was advisor to Hungary's former prime minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany.
He is resident professor at the Budapest University of Economic Sciences.
Barroso can set about picking his team of commissioners now that the Czech Republic has finally signed the EU's Lisbon Treaty.
The appointment of the EU Commissioners must be approved by the European Parliament.
