Guinean vote peaceful: foreign observers
(CONAKRY) - Guineans turned out in numbers at the polls Sunday to vote in "peace and serenity," a group of foreign observers including the European Union, African Union and regional grouping ECOWAS said Sunday.
A statement released by the heads of mission lauded "the commitment of numerous Guinean voters who went to the polls to determine the future of their country in peace and serenity."
They called on "all the candidates and their supporters to wait for the final results in the same atmosphere of calm and tolerance that prevailed during the election campaign."
Guineans were also urged to "use only legal means to resolve any disputes," according to the statement read by the leader of the EU observers Alexander Graf Lambsdorff.
Observers will continue their work "with the utmost vigilance" during what they called the critical phase of "counting, centralising and announcing results," the text said.
After half a century of dictatorship, 4.2 million Guineans were called Sunday to choose their president from among 24 civilian candidates.
