(ATHENS) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will appear before the European Parliament on Wednesday, a government official said, as the legislature is to debate his urgent request for a new bailout.

Tsipras will appear at 9:00am (0700 GMT).

European Parliament president Martin Schulz confirmed the Greek's leader's presence in a tweet.

Wednesday is a crucial day for Greece. It is to resubmit a modified bailout request to the Eurogroup of finance ministers after a meeting on Tuesday that failed to win any breakthrough for Athens.

"The Greek government will send the Eurogroup a new request letter for ESM (European Stability Mechanism, the EU's bailout fund) support and as soon as that comes in, hopefully tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, we will have another conference call for the Eurogroup," the group's chief, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, said.

Eurozone leaders including Tsipras were to hold an emergency summit in Brussels late Tuesday.
