EU orders Germany to open up airport ground services market

18 March 2010, 17:07 CET

(BRUSSELS) - European regulators on Thursday ordered Germany to open up competition for ground services contracts at its 14 biggest airports to comply with EU law.

New rules covering airports with over two million passengers or 50,000 tonnes of freight a year have not been implemented by Germany and the European Commission said it would have to do so "within two months" or else it could take Berlin to the European Court of Justice.

Ground services include areas such as baggage handling, catering, fuel and passenger shuttle services.
