(BERLIN) - Poland was officially invited on Thursday to become a fully-fledged member of the Eurocorps military contingent by 2016, the German defence ministry said.

The invitation was made on the sidelines of the annual meeting of Eurocorps' management committee in the German capital.

Poland, a member of NATO since 1999 and the European Union since 2004, currently holds "associate-nation" status in Eurocorps, formally set up in 1992 at the initiative of France and Germany.

Belgium, Spain and Luxembourg have since joined the body which can raise more than 60,000 soldiers, who normally remain based in their respective countries, and can be put at the disposal of NATO or the European Union.
