Germany wants Papademos to oversee Greece: report

(FRANKFURT) - Germany wants the Greek vice-president of the European Central Bank, Lucas Papademos, to be named head of a European surveillance group overseeing Greece, a press report said Wednesday.

The Rheinische Post daily cited European and German sources in its Thursday edition as saying Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had suggested Papademos be put in charge "of a special mission from the European Union."

The position would oversee an economic austerity plan proposed by Athens to resolve deficit and debt problems that are rocking the eurozone.

Papademos is scheduled to step down as ECB vice president in late May.

EU heads of state and government were to meet on Thursday in Brussels meanwhile to discuss how to help Greece out of its fiscal predicament.
