Consumer confidence edges up from low base: EU

(BRUSSELS) - The European Union on Thursday published a consumer confidence indicator for the first time, showing slight improvement in sentiment from a low base across the 16 countries that use the euro.

The flash consumer confidence indicator for January released by the European Commission came in at minus 15.8 (up from minus 16.1 in December 2009) in the eurozone, and minus 13.3 (up from minus 14.3) for the full 27-nation EU.

While the index is being published on a standalone basis for the first time, sentiment data has long been gathered for the purposes of providing regular, collated economic analysis, hence the comparisons.
