(BRUSSELS) - The European Union on Sunday congratulated the Egyptian president-elect, the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, on his election win, saying it was a "historic" day for his country and the region.

"High Representative Catherine Ashton welcomes the peaceful conduct of Presidential elections and congratulates Mohammed Morsi on his election as the President of Egypt," a statement issued by her office said.

"This is a major milestone in Egypt's democratic transition and an historic moment for the country and the region.

"The High Representative looks forward to engaging with President Morsi and his executive, which she trusts will be inclusive and representative of Egypt's diversity.

"In this regard, the High Representative encourages the President-elect to reach out to all other political and social groups."

Muslim Brotherhood member Morsi was declared on Sunday the first president of Egypt since a popular uprising ousted Hosni Mubarak, capping a tumultuous and divisive election.

Morsi, who ran against Mubarak-era premier Ahmed Shafiq, won 51.73 percent of the vote after a race that polarised the nation.
