(PRAGUE) - Czech auto output fell by 3.9 percent last year amid trying times in the European Union, the industry said on Wednesday.

Czech automakers churned out nearly 1,130,000 vehicles in 2013, according to the Automotive Industry Association (AutoSAP).

"Despite the drop, it is still the third highest (annual) number of cars ever produced in the Czech Republic," AutoSAP chief Martin Jahn said in a statement.

Neighbour Slovakia, the world's leading per-capita producer, meanwhile said Wednesday it had posted record output of 980,000 cars last year.

The Czech Republic is home to three major car plants: Skoda Auto -- which is run by Germany's Volkswagen -- South Korea's Hyundai and TPCA, a joint venture between France's PSA Peugeot Citroen and Japan's Toyota.

The carmakers' top Czech output was nearly 1,195,000 cars in 2011. Output fell by 1.7 percent the following year.
