Euro-MP says Croatia to join EU in 2013 earliest: report

(ZAGREB) - Croatia could become a full-fledged EU member in January 2013 at the earliest according to the European Parliament's rapporteur for the country, a local daily reported on Thursday.

"The earliest deadline is January 1, 2013 and the latest January 1, 2014. It is realistic," Hannes Swoboda said in an interview with the Jutarnji List daily.

"The membership on January 1, 2013 would be a certain record and it would be an extremely rapid procedure," he added.

"I am careful with forecasts in order to avoid new disappointments. We all have to make efforts to achieve the earlier deadline, meaning early 2013," he stressed.

His comments came a day after the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee said Croatia's membership talks could be completed in the first half of the year if its reforms stayed on track.

Outstanding issues include reform of public administration, the fight against corruption, support for the return of refugees from the 1991-1995 war and restructuring of ailing state-run shipyards, said the committee.
