(SOFIA) - A Bulgarian opposition lawmaker was handed his second jail sentence for corruption in just a year, Sofia's city court announced on Friday.

Mithat Tabakov from the Turkish minority MRF party was sentenced to four years in jail for receiving a bribe of 10,000 leva (5,000 euros, $6,500) when he served as mayor of the northeastern municipality of Dulovo in 2004.

The money was in exchange for hiring a certain company to replace water and sewage pipes in a village in his municipality.

Tabakov said Friday he would appeal the verdict, arguing it was "politically motivated."

The politician was already sentenced last year to five years in jail for breaching the public procurement act and signing an unprofitable deal for sewage works in the town of Dulovo in 2009. The project was notably paid for with EU aid money.

He is not serving his sentence yet however as he has filed an appeal.
