EU stages anti-trust raids on consumer electronics firms

(BRUSSELS) - The European Commission announced Thursday it had staged surprise inspections at several consumer electronics firms across Europe on suspicion they were engaging in anti-competitive practices.

The commission, which is in charge of policing competition in the 28-member bloc, "has grounds to suspect that the companies subject to the inspections may have put in place restrictions on online sales of consumer electronic products and small domestic appliances," it said in a statement.

Such raids "do not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behaviour, nor does it prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself," the EU body stressed.

In line with usual practice, the commission did not release the names of the companies concerned.

The raids took place on December 3 but were announced by the commission on Thursday.
