Greek farmers end Bulgaria border blockade: police
(SOFIA) - Greek farmers started to pull their tractors back from the main border crossing with Bulgaria Wednesday, ending their 30-day blockade in demand of government aid, Bulgarian border police said.
Regional border police commissioner Todor Georgiev told state BTA news agency that the Kulata-Promahonas border checkpoint in southwestern Bulgaria was now open.
Protestors were expected to fully clear the road on the Greek side later Wednesday, Georgiev was cited as saying.
Angry Greek farmers have blocked roads across Greece and imposed intermittent blockades since January 18 on all three crossings with Bulgaria that are accessible for trucks, leaving open only the small central Zlatograd-Ksanti mountainous pass.
The debt-stricken Greek government has previously rejected the farmers' demands for thousands of euros in state support to counterbalance falls in prices for produce including wheat, cotton and milk.
