(PODGORICA) - Four Balkans countries signed Monday an accord to reduce roaming charges for mobile phone users in the region to the level prevalent in the EU.

The governments of Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia agreed to gradually reduce roaming charges starting from January 1, 2015, to the level of prices in the EU.

Currently mobile subscribers throughout the Balkans pay roaming fees 10 to 20 times higher than those in the European Union.

Starting from July, the EU halved roaming charges for its citizens, with an ambition to agree by the end of the year to completely end roaming charges by 2016.

"This is a regional initiative and a model of cooperation that creates a basis to make easier the lives of citizens and to bring them in line with the EU standard," Serbian Trade Minister Rasim Ljajic told reporters.

The four Balkans states will ask Brussels to also harmonise roaming charges for their citizens visiting EU, Ljajic said.

All the four states want to join the EU. Montenegro and Serbia have launched EU accession negotiations. Macedonia has candidate status but not yet started membership talks, while Bosnia has yet to apply for EU candidate status.
